Fresh from making waves in the Australian and international indie-pop scene, Adelaide’s The Montreals, are back with their latest offering “Y2K” – a track that’s sure to soothe you out of your midweek slump.
Since first launching onto the scene in 2016 with their acclaimed debut EP Indigo Club, the eclectic South Australian quartet have delivered back to back stand-alone singles oozing with their unique blend of So-Cal inspired rock, R&B and disco beats, all combined to jangly perfection.
After their recent singles “deadheads” and “Sardines” gained both the national and international indie tick of approval, the band have been lucky enough to score themselves sold-out support slots for some of the biggest names in music, including Duke Dumont, Last Dinosaurs, Alpine and North East Party House. They’ve also performed alongside the likes of Pnau and SAFIA at South Australia’s Oh Yes Festival, garnering them a fan base as diverse as their style, and one thats well deserved.
“Y2K” is the fresh release from the group, which sees them once again perfecting their signature sleazy, surfy sound. Full of fun hooks and samples, the track croons sexy bedroom vibes and incorporates “shitty GarageBand synthesisers and direct-input guitars with zippy, polished production” to keep that homegrown style “cartwheeling the line between polished and raucous”. Recorded in a home studio in Thebarton, SA, the single was mixed by Steve Schram (San Cisco, Paul Kelly) and mastered by Studio 301’s own Steve Smart (Vance Joy, British India).
Vocalist and Guitarist Angus said “Y2K” was born when “we asked the sound engineer if we could do a kazoo-based cover of “Sandstorm”, he said no. We said Y2K (Yes 2 Kazoo)”. Stefan, fellow vocalist and guitarist going on to add that “Y2Ks about wasting all ya time when ain’t got much.” Well we’ve got all of the time in the world for this track boys!
