Sydney Lock Out Film Turn It Up! to open Australian Music Week Film Festival as individual tickets go on sale

Australian Music Week Film Festival presents a diverse lineup of film premieres, set to grace the event on 10-11 November. Already announced, films range from discussing the politics of music to sharing the uniqueness of Melbourne’s music scene. Today, the 13th and final film was announced, Turn it Up! Finding Sydney’s Sound, which discussed the city’s lock out laws and tackling the urgency needed to save Sydney’s live music scene and culture. Set to kick of the festival, Turn it Up! Finding Sydney’s Sound will screen at 3pm on Wednesday, 7th November at GU Film House in Cronulla.

The opening festivities will kick off with a Welcome To Country and a speech from local Mayor, Cr Carmelo Pesce. The film will follow, ahead of a keynote address from Senator Glenn Sterle, who will kick off the conference program with a look at the current state of the Australian music industry and culture.

Turn it Up! Finding Sydney’s Sound compares the previous vibrant culture to the current scene, working out what needs to be done and asks the question: is Sydney dead or just changing? Featuring appearances from the likes of Abby Dobson (Leonardo’s Bride), Ian Moss (Cold Chisel), Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus), Flight Facilities, Alison Avron of Sydney venue The Newsagency, Hannah Crofts (All Our Exes Live In Texas), Lindsay McDougall (Franzal Rhomb), Tex Perkins, Trish & Jodi (The Clouds) and many more, this film covers all possible opinions, from artists who previously got their shot thanks to great live music venues, people working in current music venues and new artists keeping the scene alive.

Hannah Crofts from All Our Exes Live In Texas argues that lock out laws are so bizarre as people are shutting down venues but giving nothing in return. Abbey Dodson from Leonardo’s Bride alternatively believes that there have been all kinds of restrictive prohibition laws, but  other great things have come out of the woodworks in its place. With a million different opinions they all come to the conclusion that the Sydney music scene can live on, but it takes all of us at home coming out and supporting live music.

The screening is open to all Australian Music Week delegates and performing artists, and for $12 ($10 for Cinebuzz Members) there are a limited number of general admission tickets for the rest of us!
