Durand Jones & The Indications have offered up the first taste of their sophomore album, American Love Call, set for release March 1st, with their latest single “Don’t You Know”. It’s a nostalgia drenched track, and yet another nod to the classic soul music of the early Seventies.
“Don’t You Know” is put simply put – a jam! A real masterclass in classic American soul. The track is built around the sublime back-and-forth vocals from Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer, with Jones’ baritone complimenting Frazer’s falsetto perfectly. It all comes across as effortless, with the mixture of horns, strings and guitar provided a smooth and flawless backdrop for Jones and Frazer’s dual vocals.
The band originally started as a college side project between five friends. Their 2016 self-titled debut album, which was re-released earlier this year, was initially recorded for $452.11 (including a case of beer). Initially released on Colemine Records, the album quickly earned traction across the US on the back of an impressive live show and the enthusiastic recommendations of indie record store workers. Since then the band have continued to go from strength to strength, and earlier this year appeared at Austin City Limits.
Their forthcoming record promises to be an extension of their signature sound; it’s the record they dreamed of making, and now can make now they’ve got more than $450 to spend. “Don’t You Know” is yet another great example of contemporary bands channeling the sound and style of the past, and it’s definitely got me excited for the new album in March!
