“Shooting Star” is the new single from Brisbane dream pop outfit Pool Shop, the first since the transition from solo project to a full band operation.
Pool Shop is the brainchild of Jamiee Fryer, the guitarist and vocalist for Major Leagues. Initially the project had been a solo affair, but for the recording of “Shooting Star” Fryer was joined by Major Leagues bandmate Vlada Edirippulige on guitar, along with Luke Pallier (guitar), Peter Bernoth (keys) and Dougal Morrison (drums).
“Shooting Star” is a perfect dose of shoegaze, replete with reverb-laden guitar and lush instrumentals. Yet despite its sunny exterior, the song tackles some darker and more existential themes, namely depression, anxiety and the fleeting nature of life and death. As Fryer notes, “Shooting Star is largely about how quickly people’s light can be extinguished, no matter how brilliantly it was burning at the time.”
Following a brief hiatus at the end of 2018, “Shooting Star” shows that the success of Pool Shop’s previous singles “Can You Dream” and “How Long” were no fluke or fleeting fancy. With the project now upgraded to full band status too I imagine we’ll be hearing a lot more from Pool Shop in the future, until then get around “Shooting Star”, it’s a beaut!
“Shooting Star” is available now. Keep up today with Pool Shop via Facebook.
