One of our favourite parts of Sydney Festival is the About an Hour program – which gives those short on time and cash the opportunity to catch some wonderful theatre.
The premise is simple: The shows are round about 60 minutes, and the price tag is $30 for all performances and all tickets. Not bad, huh?
2011 sees 9 About an Hour performances take up residencies at venues across Sydney and Parramatta – although most will be seen at Sydney University’s Seymour Centre. We’re particularly excited about Mike Birbiglia: My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend. The American comedian, who is frequently featured on acclaimed radio show and podcast This American Life, is well known in internet circles and is downright hilarious. This one man show is sure to be one of the hits of the festival.
We’re also looking forward to The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer, pictured above. Tim Watts’ performance is for the whole family, and is “a highly imaginative fusion of animation, mime, puppetry and music.” Let’s face it, most kids don’t have enough attention span for a full length production – so where better to start than this?
Meanwhile, Invisible Atom (pictured in header) is sure to be a critic’s wet dream, following on from a hugely successful “five star” run at the Edinburgh Fringe. And music fans need look no further then East London, West Sydney, which “brings together a crew of dexterous hip-hop artists from London and Sydney to exchange ideas and smash inner city stereotypes.” Amazing!
