Ahead of their release of their new EP Naked, I chatted with the band’s bassist Mikey Godde about the new year, new album and new shows…
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us! Let’s start off with the big news – Lizard King Records. What a way to end 2010, getting signed to those guys! What was it like getting that news? I imagine it wasn’t a “sudden” piece of news, however… at least for you guys?
It was pretty sudden actually, they had been keeping a creepy eye on us for a while, but like any good pervert we had no idea.
How’s your experience been with them so far?
Great! Before they came along we were homeless and scraping up spare change for food. Now, we are homeless and scraping up change for food but we have some rad music videos and a brand new EP.
How has it changed things for you?
We now rehearse pretty much every day in our very own studio…and sleep less…. and I think our guitarist might be going crazy.
You’re touring with Dead Letter Circus from late March – have you seen those guys live before?
I haven’t but our crazy guitarist has, he said they were “scarily awesome”.
What can we expect from your shows on that tour?
Live shows are our thing. We could have been surgeons or scientists, but we play live music instead.
“Naked” is the first music video to drop off the EP of the same name. Where did you guys film that?
At the studio where we tracked the drums for the track “Like A Fox” off the upcoming E.P… our drummer broke the handle off the drum booth door…we left him in there.
There’s been of talk of the “Muse” feel to that track in particular – do you pay such a comparison? I know Richard Kingsmill called you something along the lines of “the bastard son of Muse and Queen”…
Well as long as no one is comparing us to late muse or 80’s Queen then thats alright..but if you are.. Well them be fighting words mister!
In regards to the music video, a recent press release had this to say: “[ME] decided at the lastminute not to enlist a porn director for the ‘Naked’ video,” – what’s that all about?
A lot of my friends do porn. its not for me, but hey what ever turns you on… yeah so we had some offers from some shady characters.
Talking about the EP, it launches on March 18th, and it was mixed by Simon Barnicott. Did you work much with Simon directly?
We worked with barny directly…over the internet and telephone. I hope someone pays my telephone bill.
I imagine he would bring out even more of that alternative British rock and roll feel that you guys have always brought forth feelings of?
Working with a producer is awesome! He makes things sound banging, we never really had that opportunity before.
After the tour with DLC, I understand you’re heading to the UK to start working on the debut LP… plus a bit of a tour over there?
Yes we are going to the UK, play some shows record some music and I plan to go crop circle hunting with this crazy guitarist I have fondly spoken of.. we have aluminium foil hats and everything!
This year is looking to be quite jam packed! What are you most looking forward to and is there anything else I haven’t mentioned that’s on the cards?
Well, we are most looking forward to going to the UK and recording an album… its a lovely feeling to know we are about to make the record we have been wanting to make since we all met.
Catch [ME] at Raval in Sydney on Wednesday night! EP out on the 18th.
