Fed Square’s FREE live music series, Fed Square Live presented by The Push continues through January with a line up of indie, blues, dance and rock performances by Australia’s top independent acts and emerging talent.
The January line up features Bleeding Knees Club + Snakadaktal (12 January) and Stonefield + Tessa and The Typecast (19 January). A special series of gigs around Australia Day feature Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes + Saskwatch (25 January); Loon Lake + I, a Man (26 January) and Koolism (27 January), to round out Fed Square’s special celebration of the best live Aussie music. Bleeding Knees Club + Snakadaktal
Thursday 12 January, 6pm – 7.30pm
Gold Coast surf-punk trio Bleeding Knees Club formed in March 2010, recording their first EP in a shoe shop. Their debut album due out in March 2012, was recorded in New York with Dev Hynes (Lightspeed Champion) and Dan Grech from the Vaccines in the UK. Bleeding Knees Club was recently named, alongside Kimbra and Gold Fields, as Rolling Stone’s 2011 Artists to Watch as well as a triple j Next Crop artist.
Five Melbourne teenagers who combined a snake with a pterodactyl to form Snakadaktal, bring their subtle indie pop to Fed Square Live. While still studying for VCE in 2011 the band took out the triple j Unearthed High award with their surprisingly mature sound. The band rounded out their massive 2011 with a triple j Next Crop award, the release of their 6-track EP in December and an East Coast Australia tour.
Stonefield + Tessa and The Typecast (Pictured Above)

In 2011, the earthen psych-rock opal that is Stonefield- the four Findlay sisters aged between 13 and 21 – took their home-grown psychedelic rock and blew everyone away at the Glastonbury Music Festival, headlined their own sold-out national tour, supported the Foo Fighters and Cold Chisel, performed at Queenscliff Music Festival and Sunset Strip Music Festival in LA, and signed with Wunderkind Records.
Melbourne based, Tessa and The Typecast have fast become one of the most talked about groups in town and are enjoying having the industry buzzing as people struggle to find enough superlatives for them.Their piano-driven jazz-based indie pop has seen the band supporting artists as diverse as Little Red, The Vasco Era, The Fearless Vampire Killers and Kate Miller-Heidke. In 2011 they sold out their residency at the Grace Darling Hotel, released their EP Lemons, and were personally selected to support Kate Nash on her Australian tour.
Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes + Saskwatch
Wednesday 25 January, 6pm – 7.30pm
Clairy Browne and her nine-piece rhythm and blues band traverse northern soul, jump blues, doo-wop, ska and gospel with a sound that has been likened to Tina Turner & The Ikettes or Ruth Brown. Forming in 2009, Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes have performed their high-energy shows at Big Day Out, Golden Plains, Melbourne Festival and Falls Festival, and release their first debut album Baby caught the busin 2011.
Saskwatch are a nine-piece smooth soul explosion, taking their cues from Aretha Franklin and Tammi Terrell as well as New York’s bangin’ modern soul scene. Leading the pack is singer Nkechi Anele, who will take you from the depths of heartache to overwhelming joy in just one night. Performing at the Falls Festival in December 2011 and releasing their debut album early 2012 Saskwatch have been called an ‘integral part of the package that makes the Melbourne music scene a brilliant place’ by Vulture Magazine.
Loon Lake + I, a Man

To celebrate Australia Day, Loon Lake and I, a Man will perform in between live screenings of the Australian Open.
Invited to perform at the Pyramid Rock Festival and NYE at the Espy, as well as to support Australian music heavyweights Jebediah, Faker and The Grates, Loon Lake, the Melbourne indie/rock five-piece, have seen a mighty year in 2011. Recently named a triple j Next Crop artist, their frenetic riffs and “slacker rock” are what the band calls “smiley loose fun”. Having completely sold out their December Bad To Mesingle launch in Victoria the band are headed to Sydney in January and will release their EP in 2012.
Melbourne newcomers I, a Man formed in 2010, taking their name from the Andy Warhol film of the same name. Daniel Moss has known Ash Hunter for years, and Ash Hunter has known Daniel Moss for equally the same amount of years. Ash called Daniel by the nickname Mossy and Mossy called Ash when he decided to start a band. They recruited friends Erik Rene and Sumner Fish and asked them to join the band. Then they recorded an EP entitled ‘Fifteen Thirty Three’ and released it on their own label We Swimmers. Together they are known as I, a Man. Separately they are lonely and often want to be back together. I, a Man will launch their next EP at the Northcote Social Club on 24 February.

Koolism

Koolism have put together a special show for Fed Square Live a ‘Park Jam’, that features a 75 minute combined DJ set and live show.
The New York Times marked hip-hop duo Koolism as the “standard-bearer of Australian hip hop”, a year later they won an ARIA for the Best Urban Release for their third album. DJ Danielsan and Hau have played an integral part in the evolution of independent music in Australia, leaving stages absolutely smoking at major events like Big Day Out, Homebake, Good Vibrations and Pyramid Rock Festival; and have supported De La Soul, Black Eyed Peas, Lupe Fiasco and The Roots. Koolism’s 1998 vinyl-only release Lift Ya Game is to this day tagged as one of the classics of Australian hip-hop. Koolism have put together a concept show for Fed Square Live which integrates the DJ and live set adding the live set in between the DJ set.
