Adding a new voice to the next generation of Indigenous music, Thelma Plum from Brisbane has been announced as the winner of the NIMAs triple j Unearthed competition.
Judges had a strong field to choose from right across Australia and Thelma blew judges away with her haunting, spiritual sound, showing a level of experience than belies her 17 years.
“Thelma’s music hits on multiple fronts; her acoustic craft is well developed and manages to sound both hushed and warm at the same. Her songwriting too is impressive with a disarming charm to her lyrics. Hailing from Brisbane, Thelma will travel to Darwin in August to attend the iNTune Conference and perform at the National Indigenous Music Awards concert alongside The Medics, Yabu Band, Troy Cassar-Daley and hidden NE Arnhem Land musical gem East Journey among others on Saturday 11 August.
Plum’s diverse cultural background of indigenous, Australian and Brazilian heritage has shaped her worldview and has provided much inspiration to draw on. Many new unsigned Indigenous acts were discovered in the judging process that you’ll be hearing online at triplejunearthed.com and on the airwaves soon!
