As we get ready for BIGSOUND – which kicks off in Brisbane tomorrow – we continue our pre-interview series talking to Melbourne outfit Them Swoops about what they’re expecting from the event, life on the road, what’s next from the group and more…
Tell us what you’re up to at the moment…
We’ve just released our debut EP called ‘Glimmers’ worldwide thru New York label Plus One Records. At BIGSOUND we’ll be promoting awareness of this EP and also conducting a brief Q&A session with the bouncers outside Ric’s between 2 and 3am when they don’t let us in.
Have you played BIGSOUND before?
Be gentle, it’s our first time. The only other industry event we’ve played was as winners of Triple J Unearthed at the Adelaide Fuse Festival in 2012. The capitalisation of BIGSOUND when used in correspondence really helps to convey the magnitude of the event and other industry events could learn a thing or two from BIGSOUND’s clever use of the Caps Lock key.
If you haven’t played BIGSOUND before – what have you heard about it and what are you expecting?
We’ve heard that BIGSOUND is the only event in the Southern Hemisphere with it’s own gravitational pull. We’ve also heard that it’s an industry event that you really, really want to play at.
What can crowds expect from your shows?
We can almost guarantee our bass player James will be wearing a nice little green-checked shirt number – he loves that thing and the crowds will too. Something else to look forward to will be the sharp, concise, rhythmic pop music pulsing throughout the venue.
Are there any bands you’re looking forward to seeing perform?
We’re looking forward to catching up with those Jungle Giants kids, they owe us cab money from our last night on the town in Melbourne. We also plan on heckling Richard from Eagle & The Worm during their show. That guy really sucks at Word With Friends.
Any talks/speakers you’re looking forward to?
Nick Cave used to buy ice-cream at the Elsternwick Dairy Bell my sister worked at. I’m looking forward to hearing him recant his memories of this time and also hearing what impact his ice-cream consumption has had on his career over the years.
What are three essential items for life on the road?
A healthy 5-HT receptor, a steady supply of serotonin and separate door-swipes at the hotel.
What has been your favourite Australian album of the year so far and why?
Baptism of Uzi have just released an EP that has my favourite song of 2013 on it. It’s called Stray Current and the EP is called Stray Currents.
What will the rest of 2013 be holding for you?
We’re playing a residency at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne over Sept/Oct and then heading off to America in October to play CMJ!! Upon our return, enquiries will be made into treatments or programs for oversupply of serotonin.
