the AU BIGSOUND interview: The Griswolds (Sydney)

As we get ready for BIGSOUND – which kicks off in Brisbane tomorrow, we continue our pre-interview series talking to Sydney’s The Griswolds about what they’re expecting from the event, life on the road, what’s next from the group and more…

Tell us what you’re up to at the moment…

We’ve just signed a worldwide 5 album deal with Windup Records in New York. We’ll be promoting our debut album at BIGSOUND and playing a bunch of new material off the album.

Have you played BIGSOUND before?

This will be our first time at BIGSOUND. We played a few industry events in LA and England earlier this year. BIGSOUND is showcasing a lot of great Australian talent and a lot of these bands are our friends, so we’re much more excited about playing an industry event in our home country.

What have you heard about it and what are you expecting?

We’ve heard that there’s so many good bands and speakers and not enough time to see them all. We’ve also heard that no one really gets much sleep and the booze flows pretty freely…

What can crowds expect from your shows?

Crowds can expect to have a shit load of fun and drinks, and hang out with us over a few tequila shots. We’ll be showcasing a lot of new songs too, songs that we’re really excited to play, so it should be a lot of fun.

Are there any bands you’re looking forward to seeing perform?

So many, it’s such a great line up, we’ll definitely be seeing Kingswood, Chance Waters, Eagle & The Worm, Hey Geronimo, Jungle Giants, Tigertown and Lime Cordiale

Any talks/speakers you’re looking forward to?

Again, so many good speakers to check out, we’ll be trying to get along to see Nick Cave, the Gurge, Chuggy and Marty Novosel

What are three essential items for life on the road?

Cruise control, well thought out playlists and healthy food, it’s so easy to eat shit when you’re travelling a lot.

What has been your favourite Australian album of the year so far and why?

Hungry Kids of Hungary – You’re a Shadow. coz it’s really good

What will the rest of 2013 be holding for you?

Well, we’re holed up in a little bush cabin right now writing our first album, then we’ll be hitting the road around Australia on a co-headline tour with Chance Waters in September. Around the same time, our label will be releasing the Heart of a Lion EP in the states and we’ll be going to play a mini America/Europe tour and some showcases after that. Come November/December, we’ll be in LA recording the Album with Tony Hoffer (Foster The People/The Kooks/Phoenix).
