Continuing on their Salvage EP Tour, Brisbane boys MTNS also continue their quest for some good nosh. As part of their food and drink journal they’ve been keeping for the AU, the band take on the East Coast in this second and final installment.
SYDNEY – 14.02.2014
SEOULRIA
After landing from Brisbane and losing an hour (QLD needs to sort this out), it was past 11pm and we were so hungry! The one place that was open and immediately became my favourite place on earth was Seoulria. Located in the heart of the CBD, Seoulria is a Korean BBQ restaurant on the top floor. Identifiable on the streets by its fairy lighting, and distinguishable inside from its smoky smell from the open top BBQ’s – Seoulria knows how to do Korean.
We ordered the mix combo – 650 grams of meat heaven – pork, wagyu beef, loin, ribs – it’s got the lot! I love all the condiments that are complimentry: the kim chee, chilli potatoes, random things that look like skin…definitely recommend going to Seoulria if you’re after a mean feed.
PARAMOUNT COFFEE PROJECT
Quietly hidden on an unsuspecting street in Surry lies one of the most fascinating rejuvenation of spaces I’ve seen. Previously an old Paramount studio, this American style café boasts a diverse menu for specialty coffee and a fusion of brunch delights. A favourite on the menu is the soft shell crab Po’ Boy – a New Orleans style burger combined with an Asian delicacy; pure genius. I don’t say this a lot, but Paramount is an easy 5 out of 5 for coffee, food, service and vibe. You can even watch movies in the original Paramount director screening rooms downstairs!
MELBOURNE – 20.02.2014
GRUB FOOD VAN
Melbourne – the food capital of Australia. Whilst we were excited to be playing back at the Workers Club in Fitzroy, we were also keen for some new places to eat! One of our friends asked to meet at Grub food van. We were so surprised that it’s actually a van – an old vintage caravan parked in the front of an industrial yard – in the middle of Fitzroy! Our tip on the menu is definitely the smashed avocado, uniquely infused with fresh chilli and black beans. By far the best smashed avo I’ve ever had. Coffee wasn’t amazing, but I was so impressed by the avo that all was forgiven.
NORTHCOTE BAKEHOUSE
A lot of burger places are starting to latch onto the brioche (pronounced bree-osh) bun – a French style of bread with a sweet tinge. I was so stoked to see on the menu at the Bakehouse a bacon and egg roll on Brioche! The rolls were warm and golden, baked freshly that morning. Absolutely delicious! Perfect breakfast flavours for a quick fire hunger fix.
A couple of other mentions of places that we’ve enjoyed previously are Naked For Satan (beautiful rooftop bar with cheap tapas), The National Hotel, Trippy Taco, Mr. Burger (pop-up burger at Workers) and Seven Seeds.
ADELAIDE – 22.02.2014
BURGER THEORY
After a huge flight from Melbourne (1.5hrs), our appetites were large for anything. Tom is actually obsessed with burgers – I’ve known him to have a burger for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So MTNS tour is actually more like a burger tour for him. We stumbled across Burger Theory, which is in a really cool part of town. I decided to smash the chicken burger, but wasn’t that impressed. I don’t actually like thigh fillets for burgers, so that was the main problem. But the vibe was great and the cider they had on tap was excellent!
THE ROYAL CROQUET CLUB
We were fortunate enough to be in Adelaide during Fringe festival. Fringe is a citywide food and drink festival that happens once a year. One part of the festival is the Royal Croquet Club, an energetic night spot with an excess of oriental foods (Japanese, Chinese, Jamaican!), drinks, music and dwarf shows?? Anyway it is an excellent spot for a night out and for a cheeky drink and bite.
BRISBANE – 23.02.2014
FORT
So our tour had come finally come to an end. We’d enjoyed every minute of travelling around Australia, meeting people and trying out some new tunes on the road. After being exhausted from carting our entire musical setup around the country, we knew we needed one thing – coffee. Ambitiously recommended by Tom (who doesn’t drink coffee remember) was Fort – a café located in the middle of an industrial area on the Northside. We were not disappointed. The flat white was smooth, delicate and had a pleasant after taste. For mains the chorizo, hotdog really hit the spot. It is accompanied with condiments of pickles, aioli sauce, cheese and a tasty onion jam. And for dessert – a cold pressed iced coffee. Cold press has really taken off in Brisbane, with Blackstar and Reverends leading the way. But Fort definitely has developed it’s own unique flavour.
We really hope you enjoyed following us around and have had some insight into some new flavours you can indulge in around the country. There is definitely so much to enjoy about Australia – although we can’t wait to hit overseas soon! Thanks to the AU Review and everyone else who has made it out to our shows.
