As Splendour in the Grass’ permanent home in Byron Bay introduces thousands more to its capacity – along with some expected changes to the layout to accommodate (hopefully similar to what we saw at Falls) – 2014 is bringing with it a mammoth lineup to justify the upgrade. We already knew about headliners OutKast, who let it slip earlier this week that they’d be making the trip down for Australia’s premiere winter festival. But who else will we be seeing in July?
Well, let’s get the ones out of the way that aren’t surprises first. Kelis recently let slip that she’d be in Australia in July, and she’ll indeed be celebrating the release of Food in Byron. Metronomy, London Grammar, Sky Ferreria and Foster The People were all heavily rumoured for the event – some even leaked it unknowingly – and indeed grace the lineup as well.
Angus & Julia Stone make their return to the stage together after having some time out of the spotlight, while other Aussie musical forces in Courtney Barnett, DZ Deathrays and Illy are also set to head to Byron mid-year. Notably, the Australian contingent of the Splendour in the Grass line up have recently been enjoying great levels of international success over the past six to twelve months, so it will be interesting to see where their 2014 continues following on from the winter festival.
Then there’s the obligatory “heritage act”, which this year sees Hoodoo Gurus represent for Australia’s decorated rock and roll history. Finally, there are the little known acts… the ones that Splendour organisers bank will either break before they come to Splendour, or afterwards so they can claim credit for feeling the “buzz”. It’s the same thing Laneway do… but it’s this, combined with bringing on board some of the biggest names in the world, that makes Splendour always such an eclectic and anticipated list. These names include Ásgeir, DMA’s, D.D Dumbo and Mikhael Paskalev.
