Following on from yesterday’s first ten tracks, today we bring you the next ten songs that have been voted as the best of the year by the AU review contributors. So, without any wasted time…
30. Taylor Swift – Blank Space
Jules LeFevre: Tongue in cheek with a devastating hook – “Blank Space” is proof that when Swift is at her best, she’s leagues in front of anyone else.
29. Broods – Bridges
Jules LeFevre: 2014’s breakout act, Broods delivered indie synth pop like no one else, with a string of hits that were sprinkled throughout the entire year. “Bridges” is just one of those cuts. One to watch.
28. Run The Jewels – Oh My Darling Don’t Cry
27. Royal Blood – Come On Over
26. OK GO – I Won’t Let You Down
David Smith: Hands down the song that spent more time looping like a goddamned Vine in my head. Fizzy pop that appealed to my sweet tooth.
25. Kool A.D. – Hickory (feat. Talib Kweli & Boots Riley)
Isabella Fowler: The lazy sax, chilled flow and overall slacker mentality make this track an absolute gem. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy unashamedly lewd lyricism?
24. Liars – Pro Anti Anti
Dan Turner: This is an absolute monster of a track and one of my favourites from their 2014 album “Mess”. They opened with this at the Vivid festival in Sydney and it set the pace for the first half of the show. The music video for this is excellent too.
23. Megan Washington – My Heart is a Wheel
22. Movement – Ivory
Andrew Campbell: Stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it. That sinister, sexy bassline, that brooding voice, those irresistible piano keys… and that searing guitar solo to bring it all home! Inspired musicianship. Blew my socks off too when I realised this was music coming out of Sydney, and from a young group to boot
21. Thom Yorke – The Mother Lode
Nicholas Langley: The Mother Lode is both emotionally arresting and sonically adventurous, and it continues to captivate after countless listens. Despite its non traditional structure, Thom Yorke still manages to give the track an incredibly memorable hook with his most powerful instrument – his voice.
