You may know (Noah) Harris, the Melbourne singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, as the lead vocalist of rock outfit Fan Girl. You might even know him as the keyboardist for indie supergroup primetime. Now he’s releasing a new solo single, “Sheena Is A Bush Doofer”, replete with accompanying DIY video clip.
Produced by Sam Swain, and featuring Fan Girl’s Vincent McIntyre and Dom Buckham from Porpoise Spit, “Sheena Is A Bush Doofer” weaves a delicate balance between polished indie rock and a DIY spirit. It’s a spirit that translates neatly into the music video, which was recently shot by Harris in an empty house in Carlton. Whilst, it might have been out of necessity, it really highlights the intimacy of the track and its nostalgic undertones.
There’s a lot to love here. There’s a real sense of warmth and emotion, and it’s all delivered in the most wonderfully understated way. It’s evocative, and as it turns out accidentally timely: “We don’t go to parties no more, we just go to weddings and funerals.” It might not have been intended as an isolation anthem. But, with the nostalgia for greater freedom rife, it really cuts through and hits you.
Whilst, Fan Girl, remains very much Harris’ main focus, but there is the promise of more solo material on the way too. There are several singles ready to go apparently, with a larger body of work waiting to be recorded. It’s been close to two years between solo singles, but it looks like we won’t have to wait so long for the next at least.
