The independent music scene in 2011 seems to be inundated with skinny jean wearing synth pop maestro’s and minimalist experimental mayhem that is all starting to sound tired and blasé. Perth quartet Boom! Bap! Pow! have bucked the trend and are bringing back the swingin 60’s with their joyous motown inspired grooves and a recently released EP No Pleasin’.
Title track “No Pleasin’” sounds like every night out I’ve ever had, with the effervescent blend of festive melodies, doo wop bop and front woman Novac Bull’s deliciously smooth vocals that house just a hint of devilish intent. “Science” is a gloriously happy affair that manages to make heart break sound attractive and kind of fun. It’s followed by the sensual slow jam of “Liar” and the short snappy “Fast Woman” with its ridiculously catchy beat that is perfect for frenzied, limb flailing dancing.
Boom! Bap! Pow! have decadent arrangements and a fun loving vibe that is impossible not to enjoy. The brief collection of songs on the No Pleasin’ EP are sure to bring a smile to your face and peace to your soul with their gentle, laid back grooves.
