Full of life and vibrant flavours REGGAETOWN WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL 2011 is just around the corner. To be held on Saturday September 10th at TJAPUKAI ABORIGINAL CULTURAL PARK, CAIRNS.
After such a massive year in 2010, which included winning the TIME OUT BEST FESTIVAL AWARD, REGGAETOWN is set to sizzle once again, bringing together roots and culture with a tropical twist.
Proudly hosting some of the living legends of Reggae and World Music, Reggaetown 2011 present:
Famous reggae band from Kingston Jamaica, THIRD WORLD, formed in the early 70’s and have not stopped recording and performing from then until present day. These heavyweights of reggae have songs that are known all over the planet, from their original state or some very famous covers. They have worked with Stevie Wonder and a host of world greats. They are looking forward to their long awaited return to Cairns and are not to be missed.
O-SHEN was born and raised in Papua New Guinea, but now resides in Hawaii. Ready to return to Cairns to appreciate the Reggaetown festivities. A hit sensation in both Hawaii and Papua New Guinea, it is time for Australia to appreciate these Pacific Reggae vibes.
Ex Salmonella Dub front man TIKI TAANE, returns to Reggaetown with DJ Downtown Brown, for his mix up DJ/MC/Acoustic set. Although affectionately known as ‘King of the Dubs’ in NZ, Tiki’s musical influences and appeal are broad, traversing from dubstep, traditional style reggae, old school drum and bass and hip-hop, to more contemporary pop/rock sensibilities. ‘In the World of Light’, his new album, draws on all of these influences.
New Zealand’s Reggae/Soul heavyweights, THE BLACK SEEDS have just rocked Splendour In The Grass and are excited to make their debut appearance in Cairns at Reggaetown 2011. They will be playing old favourites and songs from their forthcoming album release.
Samoan artist KING KAPISI (aka Bill Urale) was the first Polynesian hip-hop artist to receive the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll Award for Songwriter of the Year for his single ‘Reverse Resistance’ in 1999. He has performed and gigged at almost every major music festival and event in New Zealand as well as tours in Australia, Japan, Fiji, Hawaii, Tonga and Samoa in the past two years. Also having toured extensively in Canada, Germany, Ireland, England, Norway and the USA.
JAH MASON, is rough and ready from Kingston Jamaica. He returns to Reggaetown, a favourite of the festival, he is one of the few Jamaican artists to combine Dj’ing and singing. His sets are inspiringly explosive and a fine way to get your booty shakin.
TABURA Featuring THE BLACK BROTHERS, are a powerful and innovative group of young West Papuan musicians based in Melbourne, who are breaking new ground with a unique blend of music crossing traditional and contemporary genres, fused in original songs and classic tunes by their forefathers.
We are also thrilled to welcome back one of the favourite sons of Reggaetown NICKY BOMBA. Nicky will be conducting the REGGAETOWN ALL STAR JAM. You never know who you will see on stage with Nicky… last year his guests included John Butler, Harry Angus from The Cat Empire, Carlo Santone from Blue King Brown along with many more… Although Nicky is uber busy on the road with The John Butler Trio and doing solo shows for his own album release, ‘Planet Juice’, he still makes time for his Reggaetown family.
