Last night, Phil Stack, legendary double bassman, jazz and rock maestro, and founding member of Thirsty Merc launched his latest solo album, Colourful Noisy at Marys Underground in Sydney. It was a triumphant night, and an absolute treat to see a band which can seamlessly transition from jazz to rock and be so freaking great at both.
In the new COVID-safe way of the world, it was a seated gig and reduced numbers, but that didn’t detract from the intensity of the performance. With a total kick-arse band in tow, Harry Sutherland on keys, Evan Mannell on drums and Sean Carey on guitar, it was a show which highlighted their versatility and talent.
Stack was in an ebullient mood, and played songs across his catalogue, with the new songs from Colourful Noisy being just as well received. A highlight at the end was fellow Thirsty Merc-man Rai Thistlethwayte jumping on stage for the encore, for a performance of The Beatles “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window”.
As a major added bonus, Abby Dobson was the support act.
