Triple J’s Unearthed High competition winner, George Alice continues to make waves with her latest single and official video, ‘Teenager’. The talented Australian singer and songwriter has also scored her first headline on the ‘Schools Out’ East Coast Tour.
Slow-tempo and composed with soft acoustics, the indie-pop track reflects upon the dismissal of adolescents in society. Written by George Alice and mixed by Neal Pogue, raw and powerful lyrics are evoked within the song. Sparking themes of identity, the lyrics, “Sometimes this is not for me, being told where to go and who to be, at fifteen I should try and be me”, delves into the important message of following one’s path and ignoring the norms and pressures from the world at large.
George talks through the inspiration behind the song:
“I wrote ‘Teenager’ with Maribelle right after I left high-school, I’d just finished a lot of international travel and was still really overwhelmed by the last year. Every line has a different meaning and was somehow relevant in my life, the main one being the sarcasm behind the phrase’ I’m just a fucking teenager”. I felt really underestimated in the music industry being so young, I know so many teenagers feel this way in the schooling system too, so I wanted to bring attention to it. I hope this song can be the making of more unique individuals and kids stepping out being who they are.”
