Domestic travel is in full-swing, which means Sydneysiders should be swapping turns hopping between some of the state’s greatest spots. They all have their moments, but one of the most consistent in terms of both popularity and value has been, is, and will always be Orange. The pocket of serenity, wine, and some of the East Coast’s best produce, is constantly in sight for discerning road trips. And it’s changing all the time.
With 2021 rolling around, you might need a new itinerary. We’ve got you. Here you’ll find recommendations from a local, Alexandra Pilcher, who is the founder of local institution The White Place.
Check in: The White Place
Whether you’re looking to stay or shop, The White Place, located on one of Orange’s most desired streets, is more than just ideal. If you’re looking to shop, this well regarded retail store is built on a highly curated collection of homewares, cushions, rugs, furniture, art as well as interesting and stylish fashion and jewellery. If you’re looking to stay, the store doubles up with some luxury boutique accommodation, where you can stay in either of the two self-contained and fully furnished homes. The houses are extensions of The White Place aesthetic, with everything inside available for purchase.

Eat: The Agrestic Grocer
The Agrestic Grocer is a retail-restaurant-bar concept just off Mitchell Highway, with a strong and beloved focus on health, provenance, and sustainability. The food here is amongst some of the best you’ll find in town, particularly exciting if you happen upon one of their famed ‘Ruby Tuesday’ nights. If so, you’ll find local and touring artists performing covers of classic albums back-to-back, through the likes of Jagged Little Pill, Joshua Tree, and Parachutes. Although note that COVID-19 has put a holt to the event, with a return eyed for April.

Drink: Parrot Gin Distillery
This adaptive reuse project has turned an East Orange warehouse into a fashion-forward gin distillery. The Foragers Blend is a highlight at Parrot Gin Distillery’s The Aviary, but really anything here will do – particularly those sample tastings and rounds of bespoke cocktails from the bar.

Sing: Mr Lim’s
Mr Lim’s is Orange’s favourite Korean spot, with owner Sami one of the town’s best loved and most prolific restaurateurs. Make sure you check out this popular restaurant for dinner (although book ahead – it gets quite busy), but more importantly, for karaoke. It’s known as the ‘best night in town’… for good reason.

Sip: Nashdale Cellar Door
Have a bit of a sleep in after all that karaoke and Korean, but don’t think the Orange adventure is over just yet. Head on out the Nashdale Cellar Door when all that bulgogi is nice and digested, and your stomach is ready for some of the region’s best wines. This place was named Orange’s 2020 Best Cellar Door, and not just because of the illustrious grapes – it’s one of the most beautiful spots in Orange.
