Adelaide-based indie-electronic artist Zac Eichner is back with new music, this time the heartfelt and personal “Not A Break-Up Song”. Indeed, the track is not a break-up song, but it is a song about letting go of an earlier version of himself. Zac produced the track himself, alongside Matt Cooper. We are thrilled to be premiering “Not A Break-Up Song” ahead of its release on Friday.
The track opens with restrained keys, and builds, with Zac’s voice soaring, accompanied by emotive horns. The backing vocals add depth and warmth, resulting in a song glistening with hope and beauty. His voice has tremendous strength and emotion. He seems to have it on a string.
“’Not A Break-Up Song’ is the final song in the series of ‘Naked’, ‘Autumn’ & ‘Fool’,” explains Zac. “It follows where I left off and where I’ve landed recently. I’ve battled with depression, anxiety and self-destructive behaviour. I’ve worked hard, to pull away from that person I once was which has led to meeting my partner. It’s a song of hope, determination and reflection. Ironically named ‘Not A Break-Up Song’, I’m only breaking up with a previous version of myself.”
The beautiful clip which accompanies the song was filmed and edited by Neal Whittaker at Composed, The Studio in NSW. The clip features a one-take shot of an improvised dance from performer Rob McLean. It is enchanting and encapsulates the emotion of the song with suave, expressive movements.
“This movement piece captures the internal battle and eventual release that the lyrics represent,” explains Zac. “I think Rob and I have both been going through our own battles and watching him move to this, solidified my intentions with this song. A sense of self-reflection and intensity in the beginning and complete escape, hope and release toward the end.”
