Perth alt-pop artist Madoc Plane has today revealed his soulful new single “Right Reason” after signing to Tone City Records.
The follow-up single to “Lilac in June” – released 18 March – has smooth funk rhythms and a steady groove that emboldens the substantial lyrics of Plane’s personal struggles. There is a gripping awareness in the chorus hook “I’m hoping that it was for the right reason”, while the song shows sonic and conceptual growth.
“‘Right Reason’ is a song that shows my artistry having a more refined direction and style,” Madoc Plane explains. “Lyrically, the song discusses the idea of falling into bad habits after a setback and questioning your own decisions in this time of despair. The chorus represents a cry for help and a desire to find a way out of an emotional slump.”
Vocals and drums for the track were recorded with Sam Ford (POND, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Abbe May) at Tone City Recording Studio in Perth. Keys, guitar and ambience were added later from a pre-production session, as well as additional sampled drums, with influence drawn from Jordan Rakei’s latest record Origin.
“Stylistically, “Right Reason” displays a more alt-pop/soul sound, shown through the driving drum beat and dense harmonic and ambient layering, creating a colourful atmosphere for the powerful vocals to beam through,” he continues. “The chorus displays a catchy yet compelling vocal hook which demonstrates the desperation and emotion in the lyrics. The dynamic shape begins its climax in the guitar solo, where the harmonized guitar precedes a powerful vocal performance to close out the song.”
The release will be supported by Madoc Plane’s debut headline performance for a single launch show at Four5Nine Bar in Perth on Friday 29 July, supported by NECTAR and LUCI. With his recent signing to Tone City Records alongside established locals SUPATHICK, Romeo Walker and DICE, things are set to kick off for the emerging artist in no time.
“I’m seriously stoked to be joining the Tone City Records family! Most artists don’t get a chance to be involved in something like this so early in their music careers, so there’s a lot of gratitude going the way of Sam Ford, who has confidently backed me in to write with some bangers. I’m at a time in my life where music has become my number one priority and I couldn’t be more excited about it.”
