New Music Discoveries 25th November: BIRDEE, Bad Pony, Mums Favourite and more

BIRDEE

December is almost upon us, and we’ve added ten more tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Our Track of the Week is “Poolside”, from rising indie-pop artist BIRDEE王煒.

“Poolside” is just the track to kickstart your summer, with its bright disco vibes. It continues the progression for BIRDEE王煒 from her debut EP, Can’t Be Loved which was released in September.

“Jellyfish Rain” is the new single from Adelaide’s Mums Favourite. The track, which is from the debut EP (out February 2023) is inspired by a news article about a Scottish town experiencing a downpour of toxic jellyfish. From this, frontwoman and lyricist Sasha Theunissen has crafted a cracker of a song about reality and not knowing what is real and what is not. Feisty, full of energy and a wonderful bluesy groove; there’s no surprise they were nominated at the recent South Australian Music Awards. Adelaide readers can catch the band at their single launch tomorrow evening at Jive.

Bad Pony are back with “Hand Me Down”, which is the lead single from their long-awaited debut album, Forever Up & Coming.  As with all things Bad Pony, it’s high energy, laden with hooks and written from the heart.

“Second Try Theme” is the delightfully ominous debut release from Low Monroe, the alter ego of Melbourne artist Mark Sergi. Lyrically inspired by 50’s noir, and borrowing heavily from the 80’s post punk and synth pop bag of tricks, “Second Try Theme” grabs you from the outset. It’s slightly unsettling, but utterly compelling and we can’t wait to hear more.

Brisbane’s Kedus craftily blends multiple genres, from RnB and jazz to hip-hop, trap and indie to his own unique style. His new track “The Little Things” will be on his forthcoming debut EP, Moments In The Blur which is out in January.

We have a double whammy of WA music this week, with new tracks from Michael Savage of The Little Lord Street Band fame and WA favourite Timothy Nelson.

“forever, lover, whatever” is the first new music from Nelson in two years. It’s an emotive, engrossing slice of indie folk – and well worth the wait. Thankfully we shouldn’t have to wait quite as long for the accompanying album, which is due next year. Likewise, Savage’s new track

“Only To Love You” is also teasing a new album. The track is steeped in sincerity, it’s a little sentimental, but equally an utterly charming slice of indie pop that will brighten anyone’s day.
