Charley Crockett played his first ever gig in Australia at Sydney’s The Metro Theatre and he didn’t disappoint. He was supported by local Sydney darlings Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys. Caitlin drank all the tequila, broke hearts, won hearts and was without doubt the perfect support act for the Texan.
Charley and his band The Blue Drifters played songs from his vast catalogue of country, blues and Americana.
The Blue Drifters arrived on stage announcing Charley Crockett with”The Man From Waco” theme. From the openers “Cowboy Candy” and “Time of the Cottonwood Trees” fans quickly responded to Charley’s Texan charisma, dancing and singing along. “The Man From Waco”, the title song from his latest release was a stand out with that golden country guitar twang sound and “Welcome to Hard Times” which comes accross as autobiographical. Here’s to the good times.
Charley paid tribute to fellow Texan legend James “Slim” Hand with a trilogy “Midnight Run”, “Lesson in Depression” and “Don’t Tell Me That” off his album covering Slims songs 10 for Slim
He covered the Jerry Reed classic “I feel For You” and then announced “They call me country, but underneath it’s nothing but the blues” before breaking into the T-Bone Walker cover “Travelin’ Blues”. Out came the banjo and Charley effortlessly played “Lily My Dear” off his album Welcome to Hard Times.
After the fans chanted “Charley, Charley, Charley” he returned for the encore and finished with his classic song “I’m Just a Clown”.
I have to admit I was introduced to Charley Crockett only recently after listening to Henry WagonsCountry and Americana show on Double J radio and became an instant fan. Thanks Henry!
