New Music Discoveries 5th May: Miss Kaninna, Georgia Mooney, Silja Rós and more

Miss Kinanna

As we roll into May, we’ve added ten more tracks to add to our Discovery: The Best New Music playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Our Track of the Week is “Blak Britney” from exciting new Yorta Yorta, Kalkadoon and Yirendali artist, Miss Kaninna.

The track is packed with swagger and is an intoxicating blend of pop, rap and R&B. Of the track, Miss Kaninna states: “‘Blak Britney’ is a fuck you to the government –  a call of empowerment to Blak women. I’m so sick of not being represented in the music scene here in so-called “Australia”. Fuck the government and fuck the police.”

“Losing Sleep” is the debut single from seventeen year old Miami-born singer-songwriter Simón. Written when he was just fifteen, the track is a strong opening salvo from the teenager and is the first taste of an eponymous EP which is on the way. Undoubtedly influenced by the melting pot of Miami’s musical community, “Losing Sleep” is an enjoyable slice of urban infused pop.

“Break It Off” from Georgia Mooney continues her run of dramatic, lush pastiches of high drama. In “Break it Off” our protaganist pines over a love infatuation that will of course, end badly. Mooney’s vocals soar like the heavens as her ‘anything but beige’ approach captivates and delights. Do check out the video – it is very special, and features Eora-founded aerobics queens Retrosweat. In other news this week, Georgia has announced the release date for her debut solo album, Full of Moon. Pencil 25th of August into your diaries.

“Share U” is the new single from Icelandic pop artist (and recent Eurovision hopeful) Silja Rós. It’s a soulful number, with a wonderful groove and some beautiful vocals from Rós. The track is the first single to be released from her upcoming third album, which she is working on at the same time as creating her first ever TV series.

Colorado & Company, from Inner West Sydney, are fairly new to the scene. “Still” is the band’s second single, and a strong follow up to their debut “Break”. It’s indie rock, but with a distinctly Australiana/folk tinge thanks to the inclusion of some fabulous fiddle work. It’s still early days, but the five piece seem to be on the right track, and we look forward to hearing more from them in the future.

Sydney duo Stunts have recently dropped Homework, their debut album, and the focus track is “No Feels”.  The band pays homage to the post punk/new wave of the 80s and the grunge from the 90s. Guitars meet synths nirvana. About the track the band writes: “No Feels is a breakup duet told from two different viewpoints by generational music misfits and co-lead vocalists Matty and Racey. It’s about the feeling in your stomach when the words have finally been said and can’t be unsaid. It skips ahead at 132 BPM with pulsing synths, beats, wandering bass and jangling guitars… shifting into wall of sound choruses with live drums, distorted guitar and EBow. “

Everybody’s favourite cowgirl, Caitlin Harnett is back with her Pony Boys with a new track, “Even Cowgirls Cry”. It’s the first single since her 2020 album, Late Night Essentials, and once again it’s a gorgeous intersection of country meets rock’n’roll. About the track, Caitlin writes:  “I wrote Even Cowgirls Cry for a friend who was battling between letting people into her life and the realisation that she was better off on her own. It’s okay to be alone and happy.”. In good news, she has announced a mini single tour, kicking off in June, hitting Brisbane, Burleigh, Melbourne and Sydney. Head to her Facebook page for more details.
