Laura Lucas and Lawson Hull, both talented indie-folk storytellers, have joined forces to create a tender and emotional ballad “I Imagine You Are Happy”. Released today, it is a delicate little tune, simple and warm, reflecting on sentiments of wishing the best for someone who has departed from your life.
About the artists
Laura Lucas is a Canadian-born, Australia-based artist with a passion for storytelling. Her music features introspective songwriting, delicate vocals, and dreamy instrumentation, combining elements of indie-folk with a warm, modern twist. Drawing comparisons to Lana Del Rey, Phoebe Bridgers, and Taylor Swift, Laura’s songs deeply resonate with listeners, expressing complex emotions. In relation “I Imagine You Are Happy”, she says that “this is one of my favourite songs I have written so far”
Lawson Hull, an Australian musician, humbly describes himself as an “Aussie take on Tom Petty, but half as good.” Despite his modesty, he possesses immense musical and lyrical talent. His music exudes warmth, atmosphere, and spaciousness, placing him among Australia’s finest contemporary indie-folk voices, akin to Angus and Julia Stone, Boy and Bear, and #1 Dads. On creating “I Imagine You Are Happy” Lawson says that “We kept it simple. Laura and I both have cozy, warm voices and we let them do their thing.”
Laura and Lawson are both gifted and introspective storytellers, each with a penchant for evoking nostalgia and warmth in their music. Laura’s debut EP, Light the Candle, Hold the Mirror was produced remotely between Canada and Australia, allowing her to express how both places have profoundly influenced her artistic journey. Similarly, Lawson’s EP, Mountain Days, was born during a period of isolation in nature, drawing inspiration from his memories of living on a small mountain in the serene Watagan Ranges of New South Wales.
In light of these similarities, their collaboration is only a natural and perfect fit. Their collaboration, “I Imagine You Are Happy,” marks the first time they have worked together.

1. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I truthfully have no idea. Probably just working in a zoo or something. Maybe a bakery?
2. If you were reincarnated, what would you want to come back as and why?
Probably a bird, so I can annoy the annoying people from my previous life.
3. What’s your favourite lyric in IIYAH?
“All this time, never knowing where to draw the line, I don’t mind not knowing”.
4.Who is your dream musical collaborator?
Sam Fender, for sure.
5. What’s your favourite venue you’ve played so far, and what’s your bucket list venue?
I haven’t played anything crazy yet. I thought The Grace Emily in Adelaide had A LOT of character. I wanna play at some big old theatres someday. Any of them.
6. If “I Imagine You Are Happy” had a colour what colour would it be?
Baby blue
7. Were you always this cool or did it develop with age?
I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic because you wouldn’t ask me this in person but let’s say I’m “cool” for arguments sake. I was always cool but wasn’t always “this cool”. Although, what’s perceived as cool changes all the time. So maybe I’m this cool periodically. Not sure where it starts and ends though. I definitely used to wear clothes that are no longer cool.
8. Which songwriters have you felt inspired by lately?
Ken Yates, Ruston Kelly, and Day Wave
9. What do you do when you feel creatively blocked?
Running will usually do the trick. Or maybe doing some menial tasks around the house. I like to put on noise–cancelling headphones and vacuum until the Dyson battery dies. If I want to be inspired, I need to stay the fuck away from my phone and YouTube.
10. If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?

1. Do you like your sandwiches fresh or toasted?
Toasted all the way. Unless it’s Subway, then I’d say fresh because everyone knows you pick your Subway order when you’re 13 and never change it.
2. Favourite podcast?
I very rarely listen to podcasts, but when I do it’s almost always “We Can Do Hard Things” with Glennon Doyle.
3. Do books or movies ever inspire your songs?
Sometimes, yes! The title of my song “Other Rivers” was inspired by a John Steinbeck novel, and some of my lyrics have been inspired by other books. My Instagram explore page is always filled with film quotes that I sometimes save and use as writing prompts.
4. How did you get into songwriting?
I started when I was 11 or 12, around the time that I was trying to learn to play the guitar. I always loved music and loved spending time alone, so songwriting was something I gravitated towards naturally as something I could enjoy doing with myself. I remember taking songs I liked and using them almost as templates, trying to recreate them with my own stories. I wrote a lot of very bad songs.
5. You seem like a shy person. What’s it like playing your songs to people?
Slightly terrifying. But it’s getting easier the more I do it!
6. If you could truthfully remember the first song you ever wrote, would you play it live as a dare?
I would not want to put anyone through that, so probably not.
7. Who was the first person you showed “I Imagine You Are Happy” to and what did they think?
8. If “I Imagine You Are Happy” was a movie, who would you cast in it? A one sentence plot line to follow!I would cast Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar–Jones. It would be a sequel to Normal People where Connell and Marianne run into each other years later and reminisce about their tumultuous relationship. Not sure if Sally Rooney would sign off on that though.
9. What artists have inspired the new releases you have coming up?
Write for yourself. Be honest.
