Fans of JPEGMAFIA, or ‘Peggy’ as he’s otherwise known, would tell you that this year he’s announced he’ll be releasing two new albums and a remastered one from his early music days. And if the first album, SCARING THE HOES, a collab album with fellow trailblazer Danny Brown, is anything to go by then 2023 is definitely the year of JPEGMAFIA.
And now, Sydney and Melbourne fans are being treated to a pair of shows headlined by Peggy. Peggy was last in Australia in July 2022, with many Aussie fans expecting to only see him back for the upcoming Listen Out festival.
But now he’ll be headlining at the Forum in Melbourne on September 25 and Sydney’s Roundhouse on September 27. Tickets will go on sale for Frontier Members on Wednesday 23 August, before the general public on sale Friday 25 August. Currently, he’s touring North America alongside Danny Brown, performing songs from SCARING THE HOES and beyond.
JPEG has been a frontrunner in the underground rap scene for many years. Having been making music since he was 15, and under the JPEGMAFIA moniker since 2015, Peggy has recorded and released hundreds of songs, almost all entirely produced, mixed and mastered himself. He attributes this holistic approach to his rapid pace of music production.
On every one of his albums, he’s been able to almost entirely reinvent himself, whilst keeping the same tight, hyper-online, communist raps he’s known for, over some of the cleverest sampling since the prime days of Kanye West.
Across all of these albums, Peggy has proved himself to be a leader in the alternative rap scene, receiving critical acclaim and appearing on many year and decade-end lists. Ever since 2018’s “Veteran”, Peggy has been front and centre of the underground rap scene, his influence stretching far beyond what his relaxed character may suggest.
JPEGMAFIA is a truly exhilarating rapper and performer, the kind whose performance can be your favourite without knowing any of the songs. At last year’s Sydney show, I noted that he kept it “raw and real”, something that many others have agreed with me about.
