South Summit share latest EP Tales of the Yeti and six artists they’re listening to right now

Perth indie-rock five-piece South Summit have returned yet again with their second EP of the year, Tales of the Yeti – released 4 August – just six months after dropping the former Creatures. Featuring the singles “Just Like You” and “Sidelines”, the six-track project explores more of a reggae style with local influences.

The past 18 months have seen the band take on an extensive touring schedule and their latest offering is an accumulation of home jam sessions and writing on the road. Dave “Parko” Parkin (Spacey Jane, Tired Lion) was enlisted for his talent again at Blackbird Sound Studio in Perth and helped mould the songs into their final form.

“For Tales of the Yeti, we wanted to keep building musically from what we had previously done before, experimenting with more styles and not being strict on what themes came out of the jamming process,” says guitarist Nehemiah Reuben. “This EP covers a few genres and shows what we’re capable of when playing music. We enjoy all types of different styles and love jamming whatever feels good, this EP is a good representation of that.”

In support of the EP, South Summit have shared six Australian artists they are listening to right now.

King Stingray

We met these lads at Falls Festival, where we found ourselves having a good chat. With the band performing songs with lyrics in both English and Yolŋu Matha, their sound is really unique and inspiring. Good music and messages in their songs is what caught our eye. The past couple years for this band have been huge, these lads are an inspiration to all young kids who want to get into music – that’s what counts.

A song we enjoy listening to – “Raypirri”

The Vanns

We were fortunate enough to have caught their set in Tasmania when we both played Day On The Lawn in April of this year. Feel good tunes and a splendid live set is what best describes them. We have been digging their latest album, their polished sound definitely caught our eye. We hope the stars align for a show sometime in the near future.

A song we enjoy listening to – “Thinkin Bout the Nights”

Beddy Rays

We’re fresh off supporting these boys on an Australian tour and these lads have a wicked sound going, and are definitely one of our Aussie faves. Kicking back with the relatives, having a cold one with some Beddy Rays playing in the background, definitely completes our Sunday arvo.

A song we enjoy listening to – “Sobercoaster”

Coterie

Coming hot off their debut album, we definitely enjoy listening to Coterie’s tunes. Groovy, catchy melodies, and easy listening is what best describes them. We love listening to our reggae tunes, so to have a band from the West Coast pulling off such a unique and historic sound makes us all proud.

A song we enjoy listening to – “Sunkissed World”

Barkaa

Barkaa is definitely a strong artist we are digging right now coming from the East Coast. On top of her killer flow, her music also tells such strong messages which is what inspires us as musicians. We enjoyed her live set at Groovin The Moo, and meeting her after was a privilege too.

A song we enjoy listening to – “Blak Matriarchy”

Budjerah

A respected musician coming from the East Coast. Budjerah is someone we enjoy listening to, his swelling vocals and catchy songs is what caught our eye. A wicked artist making feel good tunes is what we enjoy most.

A song we enjoy listening to – “Missing You”

To celebrate Tales of the Yeti, South Summit will be heading out on their largest tour yet this November. The band will be embarking on a nine-date run across the East Coast of Australia, including shows in New Zealand for the first time, before closing the tour in their hometown of Perth.
