Another ten tracks have been added to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music this week; amongst them are two tracks we had exclusive premieres for earlier in the week. And, our Track of the Week goes to perennial AU favourites The Terrys for their brand new single “No Bad Days”.
“No Bad Days” continues the band’s meteoric rise that has seen them accumulated over 40 million streams, have their debut album hit #3 on the ARIA charts, and feature on Triple J’s Hottest 100 this year. They’ve also been hitting the road solidly, selling out shows and tours across Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Europe – with more to come!
The single comes from their freshly announced sophomore album, Skate Pop which is set for release on February 23rd. The first song written by bassist Trent Cooper, “No Bad Days” is described as a collision of Jamie T and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. It’s yet another strong release from the band, imparting valuable life lessons soundtracked by quality indie rock. We’re firmly on The Terrys hype train. On the back of her ARIA nomination for Best Blues and Roots album with The End, Katie Wighton has released her latest single, “Other Side of the World,” today. It’s a salient reminder that the end of the year is just around the corner, as this is the first Christmas song to come down the line, and it’s a sweet one indeed. Reflecting on those near and dear to the heart but separated by distance, a tipping of the hat to the great Paul Kelly and his ‘Gravy’ song, and some sweet bird noises thrown in at the end, this is just the tonic for getting you in the spirit. As always, her deft turn of phrase and ever-so-sweet voice brings it home.
Now for something a little bit different; Molly Lewis’ new single “Lounge Lizard”. The single is from the Australia-born, LA-based artist’s forthcoming debut album On The Lips (out February 16th)
Some of you may be familiar with Lewis’ work alongside Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt on the Barbie soundtrack; or from her work with fashion houses Chanel and Gucci. For those that don’t – Lewis is an acclaimed whistler, winning the 2015 Masters of Musical Whistling competition. “Lounge Lizard” is suave, sophisticated and a little bit sensual. It conjures up images of smokey jazz clubs and wouldn’t sound out of place on a world cinema soundtrack. It’s completely unexpected, but absolutely sublime.
Lewis will be playing a special homecoming show in Sydney at Phoenix Park Central on December 5th. You can enter a ballot here to access to tickets.
Thelma Plum is back with “We Don’t Talk About It”, her first track since her spectacular MEANJIN EP that dropped last year. It’s as captivating as always, personal, honest with her incredible vocals. About the track, Thelma writes: “This song is deeply personal and I’ve been itching/anxious to share it with you all – I’m so happy that release day is here at last”. Thelma is currently in WA supporting Cold Play on their stadium shows.
“Queer Holiday” is the new single from Inverness electronic-indie act The Joshua Hotel. The infectious hook-laden song is the final track to be released from the band’s new EP Oblivion Days, which is set for release at the end of the month via The LNFG Cartel. According to the band the track “explores the queer underbelly of deceptively misogynistic environments.” It’s a feisty and flamboyant slice of post punk that piques interest for the new EP nicely.
Also added to the playlist this week are new singles from NYC-based Australian multi-disciplinary artist Omar Musa with “Electricity” and the anonymous French ‘boyband’ 4ever lost and their new single “Insecure”.
Sydney’s indie rockers Dear Seattle have released the anthemic “idc”. This is one that’s going to cause mayhem when played live.
Finally, we have two premieres from Des Cortez (“Running”) and Atlas Franklin Alexander (“Young Love”).
