New Music Discoveries 19th April: The Rions, Pillow Queens, The Charm of Finches and more

The Rions

We have added another ten tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including two singles we exclusively premiered this week. Our track of the week is “Sweet Cocoon” from Sydney rockers The Rions.

Driven along by fuzzy guitars, there’s a maturity and self-assuredness to this new release. It’s about self-preservation, or as the band describes it: “Our new track Sweet Cocoon is an ode to bitterness. There’s something beautiful about changing who you are in order to distance yourself from who you were, and we attempted to capture that in this song. We hope you can scream it at the top of your lungs as a ‘f*ck you’ to that certain someone or something in your life. Whether you need a cocoon right now, or you’re already as badass as you want to be, Sweet Cocoon will make you sure of it.”

You’ll be able to scream it out at the top of your lungs at one of their shows soon. They’ve just announced a national tour kicking off in Fremantle on the 10th May. Head to their website for more details. Tickets go on sale today.

Acclaimed Irish indie rockers Pillow Queens release their third album, Name Your Sorrow, today. “Heavy Pour”, which was released earlier this week, was the last single from the album to drop. Passionate, punchy, and undoubtedly cathartic, the track takes the listener on a bit of a journey sonically, all whilst giving a bit of a lesson on common gender misconceptions. A little bit grungy, a little bit chaotic, and with some glorious harmonies “Heavy Pour” has us excited to get stuck into the rest of the album.

Melbourne based indie-pop sisters Charm of Finches have today released their new album, Marlinchen in the Snow, and the focus track is “If You Know Me”.  It features vocals from Sam Bentley from The Paper Kites. This is exquisite folk-pop, with delicate vocals, strings and keys. They are currently on a national tour – head to their website for dates. Support live music!

“Hotel Texas” is the title track from the forthcoming debut album from Naarm alt-country act The Smith & Western Jury (Out June 14th, pre-order HERE). The track hooks you right from those opening bars of mournful twang and lead singer Sam Lombardi’s emotive and captivating vocal. Lyrically and musically “Hotel Texas” really hit the spot and is yet another reminder of the quality of Australia’s alt-country scene.

Sticking with Naarm, “Dead Star Revolver” is the new single from Noir Post-Punk act Low Monroe & The Fugitives. The inspiration for the atmospheric track is a complex love triangle between a significant other, and a celebrity… and the actions of the spurned member of the ménage à trois. It’s moody, full of swagger and a pervading sense of doom that’s punctured from time to time by a bit of sleazy saxophone. What’s not to love?

There must be something in the water in Naarm at the moment, ’cause another track to drop this week is “Knife’s Edge” from dream-rock quintet Mt. Nadir. There’s some sweet guitars and emotive vocals on this one, a track that captures adroitly the tension of those times in your life when it feels like you are living on the edge. They will be launching the single at shows in Naarm, Sydney and Wollongong in April and May – check here for details.

Also added to the playlist are new tracks from New Zealand duo The Advocators (the country gospel stomper “Elijah”) and  Bruges-based British musician Bobbi Lu (“Vacuum”).

We’ve also added two new premieres from Golden Fang (“How Many Demons”) and Jack Biilmann & The Black Tide (“Hot Blood”)
