Exclusive Video Premiere: Libbianski “Too Many Fools, Not Enough Horses” (2024)

Libbianski

In April, New Zealand shoegaze outfit Libbianski released their gorgeous debut LP, Useless Splendour.  One of the standout tracks on the album is “Too Many Fools, Not Enough Horses”, and we are thrilled to be premiering the video today. This video is also a first for the band, with it being their debut video.

The video features vignettes of Libbianski playing live, and them strolling around the streets of Wellington. A walk-past of Slow Boat Records, allegedly the longest-running independent record store in Wellington, on Cuba Street caught my eye. I was there a few years ago—well worth the visit! Flying Nun Records also gets a walk-by. Equal opportunity from Libbianski. The clip was filmed by Kelly Styles, and edited by Nat Reid.

About the clip, the band told the AU:  “We chose ‘Too Many Fools’ to film a video for as it’s one of our most popular tracks off our album, and it was probably one of the first songs Kurt brought to the band that we all really vibed with. It blends washy shoegaze with punchy drums, it’s a song that we always try to play live.

We filmed the video for ‘Too Many Fools, Not Enough Horses’ in a classic DIY fashion. No frills, one phone camera and no shame.”

In “Too Many Fools, Not Enough Horses”, there are some killer guitar riffs, a driving bass line and haunting, moody vocals. Libbianski should be your new favourite shoegaze crush. The band was initially a side project from Kurt Williams (Tuscoma, Hollywoodfun Downstairs). Kurt recruited musicians from the local scene, and brought his collection of songs that had been worked on over the years, in New Zealand and Australia.

The songs were road tested on tours of the North Island, before heading to The Armoury Studio in Wellington, where they roped in international producer Troy Kelly. Useless Splendour was mixed by Chris Johnson (Deafheaven) at The Electric Bunker and mastered by Alan Douches.

For our friends in New Zealand, they are kicking off a national tour in August, playing in Napier, Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill and Palmerston North. All the dates are below. Get along and support live music!

Enjoy this video premiere. And don’t forget to check out the rest of the album, Useless Splendour, out now on all streaming services.
