For the penultimate time this month, we have added ten more tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Newcomer Josh Hannan, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Melbourne, takes home our Track of the Week with his debut single “aftermath”.
A recent signing to Sony, Hannan was “discovered” when an Instagram video of him singing at his sister’s wedding caught the attention of producer Jon Hume, who reached out to talk about collaborating. It was this reaching out that made Hannan realise it was time to commit to music after rebelling from his musical family by focusing more on sports and science.
“aftermath”, a brooding piano-driven track, was written with Robby De Sa. According to Hannan, ‘it’s about coming to terms with the temptations in a long-term relationship, dealing with the attention directed at yourself or your partner and how it can effect everything in your life.’
As a debut single, it’s a statement of intent, that perfectly showcases Hannan’s striking and emotive vocal. It’s a polished and confident performance – radio friendly, but with enough grit and star power to set it apart from the crowd. We suspect this will not be the last we hear of Josh Hannan.
With a week to go until the release of her third album, If I Get In, Where Would I Go, Greta Stanley is giving listeners one last taster of what to expect with new single “Greatest Hit”. It’s a bright, bold and infectious blast of pop, full of clever lyricism and positivity. According to Stanley, the song is, “about knowing that you have a lot to offer someone, and you finally found someone who doesn’t take that for granted, but it’s also a song to myself, about self love, and really working on the relationship you have with yourself.” An empowering (and seemingly cathartic) bop!

Also added to the playlist this week is “Boys & Guitars”, the latest single from The Naked and Famous front woman Alisa Xayalith. Unabashedly nostalgic, “Boys & Guitars” is a hazy, bright and woozy slice of electro pop, with the Los Angeles-based artist reflecting on adolescent crushes and daydreams. It’s a lot of fun, and a total ear worm – you’ll be racking up the plays before you know it.
This week we have another collaborative single on the playlist – this time from Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers and The Linda Lindas. With a run time of 95 seconds, describing “Please Me” as high energy is perhaps an understatement. It’s an explosion of tearing guitar riffs, wall-to-wall gang vocals, and empowerment. As the band describes it: “It’s about embodying the cool girl mindset until everyone has a big fat crush on you.”
Things are about to get pretty hectic for Teen Jesus over the next few months, with a US Tour, a national tour of Australia to promote I Love You Too, and then they’re heading out around the country again opening for Pearl Jam on their Australian tour. For tickets and full tour details head HERE.
“Empty Plateau” is the second single from Irish folk duo The Awning, which is made up of multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters Darragh Purcell and Evan Flaherty, they also happen to be cousins. It’s a beautiful and poignant song, one which finds that really nice balance between traditional folk music and a modern production style, and showcases the duo’s ethereal harmonies.
“Cardio” is the new single from Street Legal. The Adelaide rockers serve up an 80s inspired post-punk banger with big riffs and glittery synths. It’s the kind of track that will get you on the dance floor, even when you think you’ve got nothing left in the tank!
Other songs added to the playlist this week include: “Weather’s Better” the latest single from Rum Jungle ahead of their UK/EU tour which kicked off on Tuesday. We also have “Two Bridges” from rising indie sensation Mila Degray; Australian singer-songwriter Naomi Keyte‘s country-tinged single “Emmylou”, and finally “European Muse”, the debut single from Glasgow-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Curtis Miles.
