New Music Discoveries 25th October: Joe Mungovan & Aodhan, Yorke, EGOISM, & more

We can see November peering just around the corner, and this week we have added another ten tracks to our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including one track we exclusively premiered earlier in the week. Our track of the week is “Old Dog/New Tricks”, a joint collaboration from two fine singer/songwriters – Joe Mungovan and Aodhan.

If you’ve ever suffered from a case of ‘it’s all too hard’, then “Old Dog/New Tricks” will resonate. It has some coastal surf rock vibes, imbued with sweet harmonies.  Do check out the video – definitely one for lovers of our four-legged friends.

Naarm/Melbourne based alt-pop artist Yorke has just released “love on the run”, her first new song since her 2022 EP, ten feet tall. She has set the bar high on this new track. It’s got quality written all over it – incisive lyrics, cracking production with a crisp vibrant energy. Yorke and her team have pulled out all the stops on this re-emergence. Check out the video which accompanies this banger.

We’re big fans of Sydney dream-pop band EGOISM, and “Melbourne” is their third release of the year, following on from “Getting Older” and “Sydney”. They have shows coming up in Adelaide (23rd Nov) and Melbourne (8th Nov). Head HERE for tickets.

“Some Rainbows” is a gorgeous track from the stunning debut album, Roman XS released by Hayley Mary today. You can read Dylan Marshall’s review of the record HERE (4.5 stars). Hayley has a national tour kicking off tonight in Perth. Head to hayleymary.com for all the details.

Morgan Harper-Jones is a gifted UK singer/songwriter, and has dropped an acoustic version of her 2023 single, “Ships Passing”, which was the soundtrack to the Netflix film, Love at First Sight.  She has been busy reworking some of her tracks into what she terms ‘journal’ versions – stripped back gems. It will probably remind you of Laura Marling, and that’s no bad thing.

Never underestimate Amyl and the Sniffers. The final single, “Jerkin”, from their third album Cartoon Darkness (out today), is just the song to fire up if someone has pissed you off. It doesn’t pull any punches. About the track, Amy writes “It’s good to express your anger when someone’s been pissing you off and it’s good to have humour in life, especially as a woman, when you’re meant to just passively say ‘everything’s good’ to keep everyone else comfortable. [..] It’s pointless but it’s cathartic.” We’re down for that. There is an 18+ video to go with it. Head to their website for that beauty.

“Aurora / Dead Flowers” is the latest single from to be released from Miami Horror’s forthcoming concept record, and sees them teaming up with Melbourne electronic artist Alice Ivy. The track is all about the cycle of life, in both a human and ‘cosmic’ sense. It is also about recognising there is peace to be gained in acknowledging and accepting this cycle. And despite having the words ‘dead flowers’ in the title, the single has this wonderful brightness and ethereality to it, that radiates positivity and lifts up the listener.

The Adelaide/L.A. producer Modern Living duo have teamed up with DRAMA to deliver “Gave You Everything”, a bubbling house bop. Funky bass grooves and crisp percussion meander through the breathy vocals that feel close enough to make your hair stand on end.

“Apartment” is a poignant and moving track from Sydney’s YAGKI. Anyone who has suffered a devastating breakup will resonate. You can catch YAGKI tomorrow night (26th) at the Oxford Art Factory gallery bar – tickets HERE
