A band very much on the rise is Meanjin/Brisbane’s Mid Drift. The cleverly named indie-pop outfit started releasing relatable earworms in 2023, and haven’t looked back. We are thrilled to be premiering their latest tune, packed with all the feels, the anthemic “Nicotine”, ahead of its release tomorrow.
The band has drawn inspiration from artists such as Parcels and Benee, as they explore the deep feelings of going large when the heart is fluttering. There’s a healthy serving of hangxiety, unrequited love and the dreaded Sunday scaries.
It kicks off with a funky bass line, before sweet guitars and strident keys bring the upbeat melody, opening the way for lead singer Sarah’s vocals to take us on an emotional trip. They have some turns-of-phrase that strike hard, with the line “I got caught up in the moment, now all I have is this aching head noise”, just one that many of us can relate to. It’s an indie pop gem, jam-packed with sweet guitars, emotive vocals and a driving rhythm. The future is bright for Mid Drift.
Sarah gives us some insight into the song: ”There’s something empowering about being so honest and raw. My hope is that Nicotine turns the gut-wrenching feeling of hangxiety and unrequited love into something that doesn’t suck,”. They say the song was written on a Sunday arvo after a particularly large Saturday night.
Since Mid Drift’s 2023 debut, they’ve racked up some impressive highlights. They’ve sold out their two hometown headline shows and have supported the likes of Grate Gable, Old Mervs, Rum Jungle and Death by Denim. They’ve also appeared on festival lineups such as Spaced Out Festival, Festival of the Stone and Rolling Sets Locals Only Festival. It is an impressive list of achievements in such a short timeframe.
The band’s debut EP, Lemon Lime and Tanlines will be released early in 2025, so do keep an eye out for that one. In the meantime, be sure to pre-save “Nicotine” HERE and enjoy this exclusive sneak peek.
