Today, Melbourne singer/songwriter Bel Kil has released her fabulous sophomore EP, Wasted Emotion. It’s an EP containing a collection of songs that Bel describes as “a rollercoaster ride through a range of raw emotions and lived experiences.”. One of the favourites from the EP is the title track, and we are especially thrilled today to be premiering its video.
The song reflects on growing up, offering comfort, advice, and encouragement as a love letter to the narrator’s past self. Who hasn’t spent an inordinate amount of energy on analysing and suffering self-doubt? This ‘wasted emotion’ is captured artfully in the title-track. There’s a richness to the vocals that is captivating.
It looks like the video was a joy to create. Bel Kil gives us the low-down: “I’ve never laughed as hard as I did filming ‘Wasted Emotion.’ My band are absolute legends—I made them wear my jeans, swim in freezing water, and battle it out on pool ponies. I grew up racing and wrestling with my cousins and sisters, so I thought they’d have it in the bag. But three grown men were really struggling—even Louis, my drummer, who’s a champion underwater rugby player. Poor Linda Nguyen was there to choreograph, but she had nothing to work with—they were just trying to stay on. It was pure chaos. The end result looks like a beautiful summer’s day, but it was ice cold.”
So, it looks like they suffered for their art, but it was definitely worth it. Bell Kil is not just a talented singer and songwriter. She also recorded and produced each track on the EP.
Bel will be launching the EP at the Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy this Friday, the 21st of March. Get your ticket HERE, and support live music!
