Few things are as summer-appropriate as a nice, crispy Italian Prosecco, and as the weather heats up in Australia we take a look at some very fine, straight forward Prosecco from northern Italy, specifically: Veneto. The Il Colle 46 Parallelo Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG has been spread throughout the nation by Euro Concepts in partnership with The Wog with the Grog as part of their carefully curated range in response to fears of a ‘Prosecco shortage’, which Director Robert Dessanti claims are sensationalised.
For the first time, sales of Prosecco have exceeded that of Champagne in the UK, so this bottle certainly hits that on-trend nail in hopes to replicate that kind of success in Australia. There’s certainly a need, and demand, for it down here, considering the current state of Australian summer (which we hope doesn’t boil above 40 degrees again).
The Il Cole Prosecco looks to be driving demand for the varietal, with their Cuvee 46 Parallelo connected with the hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, where the hand-picked grapes are used to produce this 100% Gelra sparkling wine.
It’s elegant and crisp, bringing in that smooth body that Italian prosecco is renowned for, wrapped into a palate that’s consistent with the sweet, fruity nose of citrus and melon. Prosecco tends to be much less acidic than champagne, and this one is certainly no exception, leaving you with a very clean, crisp texture in the mouth.
Last year’s 55% rise in sales of Prosecco (in the UK) have indicated that more people are recognising the session-friendly varietal, and with outdoor parties and BBQs so popular in Australia, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be seeing a similar trend in the near future. It is often harder down here to find good Italian prosecco (some Australians do a very fine job with the varietal themselves) so it’s valuable that we have distributors bringing the likes of Ill Cole to our shores.
