If you’ve walked along Devonshire Street in Surry Hills lately you may have noticed that Oporto is dramatically changing the way they do things, by introducing their first ever “pequino”, which is Portugese for “small”. The small format store is the first of many which will be rolling out over inner-city locations in Australia, marking a giant leap for the fast-food brand as they attempt to move with the waves of modernity that are sweeping over quick-service restaurants around Australia.
“This is an extremely exciting time for Oporto. This design is fresh and modern, and is exactly where we need to be”, said Oporto CEO Craig Tozer. “To bring the kitchen front and centre for customers to view was critical in the design as we want to highlight our use of fresh produce and cooking methods. This new small format paves the way for future restaurants to open in inner city locations where real estate is limited”.
The Surry Hills store is a good showcase of what Oporto are trying to do, with a 50sqm space featuring natural materials fused by designers Zone Design, who have spun this into a hipster-looking cafe, fitting in an open kitchen and grill, over, and fryers with counter space and seating for 10 people.
Along with design, the menu at this new store has also been trimmed, focusing on Oporto’s more popular flame-grilled Portugese chicken burgers, their Bondi burger range, Embrulhos, Saladeiras, and jalepeno poppers.
