An new gastro-pub has made its way into Chippendale, fitting out a heritage-listed building on Cleveland Street with what is the latest venture from bespoke hospitality crew Idle Group, the folk responsible for Darlinghurst’s Henrietta and Bondi’s Neighbourhood. With two of Sydney’s most loved venues as part of their portfolio, The New Britannia opens to some very high expectations, offering up craft beers, cocktails, and house-made pizzas with a nostalgic atmosphere, nodding to the building’s 1879 roots and former life as Millennium Bar Pizzeria Restaurant.
“We absolutely jumped at the opportunity to work with such an established building,” said General Manager of Idle, Eddie de Souza. “While Chippendale has come a long way from its industrial roots, it’s exciting to revitalise this neighbourhood staple while still maintaining its heritage and charm.”
With a bar top made from a 120 year old piece of Oregon timber and cladding recycled from local buildings and factories, The New Britannia is a raw, industrial entry onto Cleveland Street’s strong bar and pub scene. It’ll no doubt be a popular spot for the drop-in diner too with a menu that mixes up traditional pub grub and pizza, with plans to introduce a liquor and pizza delivery service named Fast Eddie’s Pizza & Liquor. Menu highlights include The Dodger Burger, named for notorious corrupt cop Roger Rogerson, the Lanfranchi’s Chicken Parmigiana, and house-made Spaghetti Bolognese, alongside a nice selection of classic and house-made pizzas (think left-field options like the Brisket Bolognese and Mozzarella Pizza).
