Raising the Bar: Sydney’s drinking holes will turn into classrooms for top academics this week

The University of Sydney and Raising the Bar are doing something pretty unique around Sydney this week, bringing what has been a worldwide initiative to various bars and pubs across the city. On Tuesday 18th October there will be 20 different talks as 20 different academics shape up 20 different free thought-provoking talks facilitated by an environment which is world’s apart from your everyday classroom – classrooms don’t have shelves lined with world class spirits waiting to help push these talks along and facilitate actual, free-flowing discussion

Cities like New York, Hong Kong and London have already embraced this Raising the Bar concept, which was established in 2014 by a group of students hailing from Columbia University and New York University. They were looking to share unique learning experiences from the world’s greatest minds with the general public, working along the idea that a lot of good ideas and collaborations begin in these social institutions we can bars and pubs.

For one night only these talks will launch in some of Sydney’s greatest drinking destinations, curated by top academics with an appetite to start some serious discussion on topics like the LGBTQI movement, crime television, the ecology of cities, music and its benefits to the brain, the end of the world, and the dominance of major supermarkets; just to name a few.

Bookings to each session are necessary and a full list of talks and the bars they will be located at can be found on the official Raising the Bar Sydney website HERE.
