Legendary French philosopher and author Albert Camus serves as the namesake for Westgarth’s forthcoming 100-seat Camus restaurant, the newest venture by acclaimed Alergian-born chef Pierre Khodja and a platform for the expression of his identity.
Khodja, who grew up in Marseille, relates to Camus’ work in that the chef had similar experiences to the famed author, growing up Algerian in a place that identified as French. The name is a soulful reflection of this, and speaks to the freedom the chef will use to celebrate the food of his homeland. It’s a unique offering in the locality of Northcote, set to bring well-priced and honest food that showcases the vibrant flavours and spices of North Africa combined with Khodja’s classical French training and local sensibility.
Before guests get to the Turkish delight soufflé or Pistachio and
Ricotta Doughnuts (which are served with lavender honey and preserved lemon ice cream) they’ll have to get through equally delicious sounding starters like a Bourek of Spinach with goat’s cheese, mint and egg, and substantials like steamed and seared Goat Shoulder with sweet onion and raisins. Don’t forgetthe Algerian Seafood Paella either.
Vegetarians will be well-catered for with a focus on key ingredients like spinach, kale, cinnamon and feta (all used in the restaurant’s signature lasagne) as well as dishes like Butternut Pearl Barley Risotto.
