Gorgeous green walls frame Balmain’s buzzy Mr., a new licensed cafe that serves booze from 10am and keeps it light even when they’re serving donuts stuffed with ricotta or classic cheeseburgers. Keen to stand out against the long strip of dining venues on Darling Street, the locally owned 40-seater is the very first cafe in the peninsula to be serving up Will & Co’s specialty coffee alongside a short and sweet menu that echoes “support local” and puts some playful twists on Aussie favourites.
Ingredients used include Tippity Teas, jams purchased from the local markets, bread supplied by Bread & Butter Project, and many house-made goods by self-trained pastry chef Greer Rochrod (ex Pig & Pastry). This result is dishes such as cafe signature Mr Muffin, a pillow soft English muffin with creamy scrambled eggs, grilled ham off the bone, American and tasty cheese and Greer’s secret BBQ sauce with a dash of Will & Co coffee, available for either dine-in with a potato rosti and regular coffee on the side or takeaway.
Other dishes focus on the fresh and light side with the likes of Activated Charcoal Quinoa Toast covered in avocado, cumin salt, lime and radish; house-made grain free Honey Coconut Granola with seasonal fruit and coconut yoghurt; and the slightly indulgent Cinnamon Donut made from scratch, filled with ricotta and served with a grilled peach, honey and ginger crumb.
Move onto lunch and you’ll find love with the signature Cheeseburger that has layers of American cheese, beef, house ketchup and Westmont pickles. Then there’s the Poached Chicken Sandwich with lime kewpie mayo , watercress salad and house radish pickle.
If you’re a day-drinker, the cafe’s early license means that they’ll be serving up signature cocktails from 10am, even allowing you to spike your daily affogato with Mr Black coffee liqueur and ginger crumb.
