Named after a notorious outlaw subculture in Japan, Bosozuku is South Yarra’s new Japanese burgers joint and sake den, a 200-seater located just off Chapel Street with designs on becoming one of the city’s new favourite destinations. It’s from the same team behind Bird Watching Society and St Kilda’s buzzing Lady Grange, taking on a Tokyo tinge with a multi-faceted approach that includes secret sake warmer stations, karaoke and Nintendo rooms, pool tables, motorcycle chandeliers, outdoor fire pits, Hitachi train seats, and a dry ice spa inspired by an Onsen at the base of Mt Fuji.
“Bosozuku has been a long time coming, but we are so excited to see all our our ideas combine into one venue that offers so much”, said co-owner Craig Killermann. “Awesome burgers, top class drinks and an atmosphere that keeps on giving. It is one of a kind”.
The team have bought on chef Tomoya Kawasaki who has crafted up a menu of Japanese burgers with prices starting from $10, and the range is as busy as the venue’s interior. We’re talking burgers with swordfish, burgers with sliced wagyu, and even a “Big Lobster BLT” made with fresh lobster tail (that one will set you back a whopping $42). All the burger buns are naturally coloured brioche, including black charcoal, purple beetroot and green matcha. Those opting for bunless burgers can also get their choice in bento format, served on black rice.
It’s not just burgers coming from the kitchen though. Kawasaki has led a team in curating a wide selection of modern Japanese inspired eats ranging from the expected snacks like edamame, gyoza, and chicken karaage, to surprises like the Japanese chicken curry poutine fries. Alongside all that indulgence sits a nice selection of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.
Cocktails play a big focus at the newly opened venue. Aside from the range of Japanese beers, sakes and whiskys, the Bosozoku bar is serving up cocktails with a distinctly Japanese twist, like the classic Espresso Martini with has been reinterpreted with vanilla bean sake, or the Wasabi Bloody Mary.
