Sicilian-style pizza by the slice will be landing in the heart of Newtown as of later this week as Ballaro opens on King Street. Drawing on the lively street food culture of the famous Mediterranean island, the new venture from Daniele Arnone and Stefano Zanco will be adding something distinctive to the plethora of multicultural food options on the famous strip.
“Being away from Sicily, I constantly miss the street foods from home and flavours and memories of Nonna’s cooking”, said Arnone. “Stefano and I have been working to bring these distinctive flavours here. We looked around Newtown and there is nothing quite like what we’d be doing in the area”.
Named for one of Sicily’s most famous markets, Ballaro plans to focus on Sicilian pizza by the slice while also offering a variety of street foods, including large Sicilian arancinis and vegan-friendly panelle, which are chips made from chickpeas. They plan to feature 7 different toppings on the pizza menu like pulled beef with porcini mushrooms, potato zucchini with pea pesto, a signature caprese pizza, spicy nduja with pork, and more. The dough, which takes two days to prove, used for the pizza bases is based on Arnone’s grandmother’s recipe.
To celebrate their official opening on Thursday 7th September Ballaro will be giving away 100 pizza slices to the first diners who visit from 6pm that evening.
