Following sister chain Ippudo, which now has four locations in Sydney, owners Chikaranomoto Global Holdings are planning on bringing Japan’s famous Gogyo Restaurant to Australia’s harbour city. The popular brand’s first ever restaurant is slated to open in Surry Hills by the end of the year, gutting out the former digs of Salaryman which is rumoured to be relocating somewhere closer to the harbour.
Designer Paul Kelly, who was also behind the Salaryman space, has come on board to redesign the space for Gogyo, working in traditional Japanese elements which should carve out a distinctive atmosphere for the restaurant’s highly sought after burnt-miso ramen, a menu item which stands out amongst the rest at Gogyo and regularly has the restaurant’s three Japanese brands (and one in Hong Kong) attracting the kind of queues restaurateurs dream of.
The kitchen will also be flaring up the robata grill to make sure there’s more than just ramen on the menu, sitting alongside a bar menu of beer, sake, and cocktails created with Japanese spirits.
