Supafish: team behind Ponyfish Island to bring floating Mexican pop-up to Melbourne

Swimming up the Yarra to Southbank this summer is a 38-metre, 300-capacity Mexican dining barge set to bring Melbourne locals and visitors a unique summer haunt until the end of February 2018. Supafish is the latest collaboration between friends and business partners Andrew Mackinnon (The Taboo Group) and Grant Smillie (E.P & L.P, Melbourne City Brewing), the same team who brought Melbourne on-water bar Ponyfish Island all those years ago.

Hoped to be a summer destination for long lunches and afternoon drinks, Supafish will be sitting pretty in the Yarra with a schedule of seasonal sessions and activities (the details of which are yet to be confirmed) alongside an all-day Mexican grazing menu specially curated by Matt Lane and Nick Peters, best known for Hotel Jesus and Mamasita. Expect a whole range of traditional Mexican including Huitlacoche Quesadilla, El Pstor Quesadilla, Totopos Corn Chips with Salsa, and Ceviche, all washed down with a summer-ready drinks list that includes an on-tap cocktail, classics like the Margarita and Espresso Martini and a special Kombucha cocktail.

The highly detailed, immersive barge with glowing eyes and ribs will present a futuristic design that’ll surely stand out on the Yarra with a bright and bold fitout inspired by neon-washed Tokyo, paired back with recycled materials, galvenised steel and shades of white and black. There’ll even be plenty of room to throw some shapes up to a music line-up curated by Smillie himself. Make sure you’re card is loaded though – the venue will be completely cashless.

Entry to Supafish will be via Southbank Blvd, in between Ponyfish Island and Sandridge Bridge.
