Once a month, Fortitude Valley’s New Globe Theatre plays host to the antics of Ruckus Slam, an open mic poetry slam, where first timers and experienced poets alike are judged by a tin foil robot with dinosaur score cards.
No, really. That’s what happens.
February’s event showcased work from Singapore based poets Stephanie Dogfoot and Deborah Emmanuel, as well as Adelaide’s own Manal Younus.
But the main event is the competition between the local talents, all hoping to earn an elusive Jurassic Prose score from the judges in the audience, and have a shot at winning whatever ridiculous prize the organisers sourced from the bargain store next door.
The perfect mixture of powerful poetry, quirky rules, and reasonably priced drinks, it’s not hard to see how the Ruckus crew have created one of Brisbane’s most popular spoken word nights.
The next Ruckus Slam, Date Night, takes place on Wednesday 16th March, and promises to be quite the event, with poets invited to share the love, or the lack thereof, in a fun themed slam – there’s even going to be a kissing booth!
Entry is $10 and the night kicks off at 7.30pm, though if you’re keen to step up to the mic yourself, you’ll need to sign up by 7pm.
