Irish theatre group Fishamble are bringing their hit romantic comedy Swing to the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of a ten venue Australian tour, slated to play the Brisbane River venue in late May.
Following the tale of Joe and May, the show tells the story of two strangers who meet at a swing dance class. Swing stars Arthur Riordan and Gene Rooney, playing a cast of 20 characters, and doing all their own stunts dance steps.
“We’ve found that audiences in Australia have a similar sense of humour to the Irish,” says Jim Culleton, Artistic Director of Fishamble. “Audiences have remarked that they expect to experience the rich, poetic language and dark humour in Irish work, but they are also enjoying the physicality of Fishamble plays.”
Swing is coming to Australia as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme, a Culture Ireland initiative designed to promote Irish culture across the world. 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising – a pivotal moment in Irish history.
Cullerton says: “Some of the most rewarding aspects to international touring include the opportunity to promote Irish culture abroad, and the ability to find connections with audiences and artists around the world. We are very excited to have the opportunity to bring Swing to Australian audiences.”
Swing will be at the Brisbane Powerhouse from May 27th to May 29th.
Tickets available through the Powerhouse website. Full tour dates can be found through Fishamble’s website.
