Opening this weekend at the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation gallery, in Sydney’s Paddington, After Voices is an immersive art installation from award winning Indonesian artist Jompet Kuswidananto.
Drawing inspiration from the fall of Surhato’s New Order, and his own experiences of social hysteria and trauma, Kuswidananto’s multi-disciplinary installation features a series of life-size ‘ghost figures’ on parade throughout the SCAF gallery.
Mechanical hands, found objects, musical instruments, loudspeakers, and flags all add to the experience, which intends to provide an artistic dramatisation of a period of Indonesian life that allowed for new voices to be heard after years of suppression.
After Voices will be curated by fellow Indonesian Alia Swastika, based out of Yogyakarta, where she works with Ark Galerie as a freelance curator, writer, and programme director.
After Voices by Jompet Kuswidananto opens at the SCAF gallery in Paddington on Friday June 24th, with an official opening event, including talks with the artist and curator, scheduled for Saturday June 25th.
The exhibition will run until September 10th, and entry is free.
