The Sydney Fringe Comedy program is returning next month for it’s sixth year. The program presented by the producers of the Sydney Comedy Festival will run for a month, from the 30th August to the 30th September, and promises to showcase up-and-coming talent alongside some of the more established acts.
With other 100 shows from local and international performers the program is jam-packed and should cater for just about anyone. With the majority of tickets ranging from $10-15, it’s hard to ask for better value money, and it should ensure that the shows are accessible to most.
Program Director Shane Smith said, “We really want our audience to experience acts that they’ve never heard before, and for that reason we try to keep ticket prices as low as possible. We encourage everyone to come to the festival hub and take a chance on what could be their new favourite comedy act.” The festival’s hub will be located at Marrickville’s Factory Theatre, which will play host to up to 16 shows each night during the festival’s month long run.
The program, announced earlier today, features a number of recognisable names, including Barry Award nominee Rhys Nicholson, Luke Heggie and Daniel Townes. But the festival’s emphasis is definitely on supporting emerging talent, and for audiences to discover new and up-and-coming comics, so naturally there are also a number of comedians making their debut, or debuting new shows at this years festival.
Over the six years since Sydney Fringe Comedy’s arrival onto the scene, the festival have hosted the debut shows of a number of performers, who have since continued on to award winning success, including, Corey White (Best Newcomer – Sydney Comedy Festival and MICF 2015), Tom Walker (Best Newcomer – MICF 2016), Zanzoop (Director’s Choice – MICF 2016), Rhys Nicholson (Barry Award nominee – MICF 2016) and Ronny Chieng (Director’s Choice – MICF 2014, ARIA Awards 2015 nominee and Helpmann Awards 2015 nominee).
Sydney Fringe Comedy, then, seems to be a great opportunity to get on to some of these comedians early, before awards are won, and tickets suddenly are harder to come by!
Sydney Fringe Comedy is presented as part of the Sydney Fringe Fesitval 2016, and runs between Tuesday 30th August and Friday 30th September at the Factory Theatre, Marrickville.
