The 2016 Program for the Melbourne Fringe Festival has now been officially launched this week, and tickets have gone on sale for what is going to the biggest ever edition of the festival.
With 463 events, involving over 6,000 artists it’s pretty safe to say there is plenty for festival goers to choose from; and the festival have introduced some new ways to help audiences pick the show that’s just right for them.
One such way is the Festival Fortune Teller; Melbourne Fringe will be hosting the Festival Fortune Teller at the Bank Australia Ticket Booth in City Square throughout the festival. A one-on-one experience, the Festival Fortune teller will be reading palms of would-be festivalgoers to discover just which festival acts they are destined to see. The Fortune Teller will be reading palms Tues-Sun from 2pm-7pm every day of festival; but for those not able to make it in to the ticket booth, the Fortune Teller can also be accessed online from the Melbourne Fringe website.
Audiences will be able to get a introduction to some of the festival acts at the Nando’s Peri Peri Spotlight Stage (Federation Square) on September 18th, between 12:30 and 3:30pm, for a gala-esque family friendly event hosted by comedian Josh Earl. The event promises to give audiences a taste of some of the many different acts playing the Fringe, all culminating in a musical performance from the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development.
The 2016 festival will also feature Sky Light, an interactive and creative keynote from audio-visual artist Robin Fox. Sky Light will see some of Melbourne’s most prominent buildings connected by giant beams of laser light, transforming the cityscape into one giant illumination, across four nights – Thursday 15th through to Sunday 18th September.
Melbourne Fringe has a history of fostering what they describe as “cultural democracy”, or art for everyone, and their program aims to provide a balance between new and emerging acts and those more established performers. With over 460 acts, there is pretty much something for everyone.
