After breaking box office records at the Sydney Opera House run earlier this year, the Dame Julie Andrews directed production of My Fair Lady will return to the city’s Capitol Theatre in August 2017, following stints in Brisbane and Melbourne.
Celebrating 60 years of the beloved musical, the last run, which ended last weekend, sold more tickets than any other production in the Sydney Opera House’s history.
Based on the George Bernard Shaw play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady first opened on Broadway in 1956, with Julie Andrews in the starring role.
Andrews, who played Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle, was controversially overlooked for the lead role in the 1964 film version – a burn that was definitely soothed by the Oscar she won that year for Mary Poppins, while the movie Eliza, Audrey Hepburn, failed to be nominated at all.
Producer John Frost said “Opera Australia and I are absolutely thrilled to announce this return season, Sydney audiences have embraced this stunning recreation and I cannot wait to see the production come to life again at the Capitol Theatre in 2017.”
After seasons in Brisbane and Melbourne, My Fair Lady will return to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from August 27th, 2017, with previews from August 24th.
